Wolves boss Lage sacked after poor start to season

Wolves boss Bruno Lage, 46, has been sacked after a 2-0 loss to West Ham at the weekend.

Wolves also announced in an official statement that former youth coaches Steve Davies (U-18) and James Collins (U-21) will be in charge of first-team training until next Saturday.

Bruno Lage became the coach of the Wolves in June 2021, leading the team to 17 wins, 6 draws, 19 losses, and 10th in the league. In the new season, although the Wolves spent 100 million pounds on signings, the team has only won one game in the first 8 rounds of the league, gained 6 points, and currently ranks third in the last standings.

The contract between Lage and Wolves was originally due to expire in June 2024. After losing to West Ham yesterday, the club chose to terminate the contract with Lage ahead of schedule.

Wolves president Jeff Shi said frankly that Lage’s departure was a “no choice” decision: “I have no doubts about Bruno’s ability and I believe he will be successful elsewhere. However, the team has Months of form and performance mean we have no choice but to act.”

“Bruno is an excellent coach, a hardworking and dedicated manager, and a warm, intelligent and honest man. He has been a delightful partner during his time at Wolves. We had to make this difficult decision, which makes us very sad.”

“On behalf of everyone at Wolves, I would like to thank Bruno and his coaching staff for all their hard work at the club and wish them all the best for the future.”

Bruno Lage’s successor has yet to be decided. It is reported that former Olympiacos coach Pedro Martins is expected to become a strong contender for the Wolves coaching position, with the Al Wahda boss, Carlos Carvalhal, and Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou also factored in.
