Netherlands triumphed over Belgium with a 1-0 win during the final round of the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League group stage League A Group D battle between the two footballing superpower nations at the Johan Cruyff Stadium.
In the first half, the two sides didn’t have many great clear-cut attacking opportunities, the game was rather much duller. In the second half, the two sides began to have more effective attacks with Denzel Dumfries, Kevin De Bryune and Amadou Onana all taking the lead by initiating first waves of dangers. Later, Virgil van Dijk headed the goal unmarked in the box to break the deadlock. At the critical moment before the end of game, Dodi Lukebakio’s acrobatic scissor kick volley in the penalty area hit the crossbar and deflected out, missing a golden opportunity to force the game into a stalemate. In the end, the Netherlands beat Belgium 1-0 and became the first team to report to the Finals and also maintained their 15-game unbeaten streak.
In the 4th minute, De Bruyne made a through ball from the right, Onana quickly followed up, cut inside and dribbled into the the right side of box before cutting back to Eden Hazard quickly plugged in before unleashing a right footed volley in the center of the box, but the shot was too high. 9 minutes later, De Bruyne made a precise low through ball near the center circle of the midfield, Michy Batshuayi managed to successfully beat the offside trap, get in and then volleyed from a small angle on the right side of the box, but rhe ball is easily held onto by Remko Pasveer.
In the 29th minute, Nathan Aké’s through ball near the midfield circle, Vincent Janssen quickly followed up, dribbled to the front edge of the left bottom line in the box, and then cut back to Dumfries who quickly filled in in the center of the box before volleying with his left foot, but the shot was too high. 3 minutes later, Belgium got a free kick opportunity, Vertonghen took the tactical free kick, after De Bruyne took over, his through ball found Axel Witsel who had successfully beaten the offside trap in the center of the box before hitting with a right-footed half-volley, but the ball was held onto by Pasveer.
In the 35th minute, Dutch midfielder David Klaassen commited a tackling error at the back of his own half, after Onana intercepted and adjusted the angle, he then volleyed with his left foot from the outer edge of the penalty area, however the ball was briefly palmed away by Pasveer before being held onto by the latter.
In the 49th minute, Jurrien Timber made a long pass from the back of his own half, Dumfries quickly followed up, beaten the offside trap, got the ball then dribbled into the right side of the box before volleying his right foot from a difficult angle, but it forced Thibaut Courtois makes a save from the bottom right corner. In the 66th minute, De Bruyne made a long pass from the center circle of the midfield. Onana successfully beaten the offside trap, quickly followed up, dribbled past Marten De Roon who closely marked him, and then shoot with his right foot from close range in front of the left side in the box, but the ball was punched away for a corner by Pasveer who had to make a flying save at the upper right corner.
In the 73rd minute, the Netherlands got a corner kick. Cody Gakpo crossed the corner into the box, Virgil van Dijk jumped high and headed in the goal without being marked in the middle of the box. The Netherlands broke the deadlock first and take a 1-0 lead!
3 minutes later, Dumfries’ through ball from the right found Gakpo who had successfully beaten the offside side and made a return pass from the right side of the box, Steven Bergwijn quickly followed up and shot the ball with his right foot , but the ball hit the right side net and went slightly wide of the goal post. In the 78th minute, Toby Alderweireld made an over-the-top pass from the midfield, Timothy Castagne quickly followed up after beating the offside trap, dribbled past the closely-marked Daley Blind into the right side of the box and volleyed with his right foot from a difficult angle, but the ball slightly missed the left post.
In the 4th minute of stoppage time, Leandro Trossard’s cross from the edge of the bottom line from the left into the box, managed to find Dodi Lukebakio who went for an acrobatic left-footed scissor kick volley, however the ball unfortunately hit the upper right crossbar and popped out, Belgium missed the golden opportunity to tie their opponent! In the end, the whole game ended with Netherlands beating Belgium 1-0 and will now head into the Qatar World Cup preparations with confidence.
