Sporting news: Villa appoint Emery as manager to replace Gerrard; Emery’s excellent record could definitely single out the new manager

The Premier League club says Aston Villa has appointed Unai Emery as head coach, replacing Steven Gerrard, with the Spaniard returning to the English top flight for the second time in charge.

Villa sacked Gerrard last Thursday as the Midlands club has scored just nine points from 11 games this season.

Aaron Danks has been named manager and Villa beat Brentford 4-0 in his first game in charge at the weekend.

“Aston Villa are delighted to announce the appointment of Unai Emery as the club’s new manager,” Villa said in a statement.

Excellent record

Emery’s previous job in England was to replace long-serving Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger in 2018, but he was sacked after just 18 months at the north London club.

But while he has failed to reverse Arsenal’s declining fortunes, the 50 -year-old has a solid record in leading the Spanish side to the Champions League, finishing third in La Liga three times with Valencia’s name.

His greatest claim to fame, however, is his stellar run in the Europa League, lifting the trophy three times at Sevilla and Villarreal, and holding the record for the most Europa League wins by a manager.

Under Unai Emery, Villarreal beat his old club Arsenal in the Europa League semi-finals last year before beating Manchester United on penalties in the final.
