Sporting news: DFB Werner to miss World Cup with ankle injury

RB Leipzig says Germany striker Timo Werner has been ruled out of the World Cup in Qatar with an ankle injury. Scans at Leipzig revealed he, unfortunately, tore the syndesmotic ligament in his left ankle and will be out for the rest of 2022.

The 26-year-old, who has 24 goals in 55 appearances for the national team, suffered a bruised foot in the 13th minute of Leipzig’s 4-0 Champions League group win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday, and was substituted in the first half.

“The news was like a bolt from the blue,” Germany coach Hans Flick said. “I feel very sorry for Timo personally because he will miss the World Cup he desperately wants to be in.”

Werner has moved back to Leipzig from Chelsea this season in an attempt to gain more minutes to secure his place in the World Cup squad.

Huge loss

This is a huge loss for the team. For the national team and true team players, they have to make do without a good striker with a high scoring rate.

Werner, who was part of Germany’s squad at the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020 , is expected to be part of the squad that Flick’s manager will announce on November 10 .

His injury was a major blow for the Germans, who struggled in the box for some time.

Now that Werner has been ruled out, Flick will almost certainly call on the Bundesliga’s top scorer , Nicolas Völkrüger , a natural No. 9 and a formidable striker in the box.
