Football news: Lopetegui is a great coach, says Wolves captain Neves

Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Ruben Neves has appointed Lopetegui as their new manager.

But there are warnings that the Midlands club needs to stop their slide before the Spaniard officially takes over.

With a 2-3 home defeat to Brighton on Saturday, Wolves are second to last in the Premier League table with 10 points from 14 games and just eight goals.

Wolves have lost four of their six games under caretaker coach Steve Davies and he will be signed at home against Arsenal next weekend, and while they are not out of touch, things need to happen soon to get better.

Get out of the downtrend

He’s a great coach, he’s done a lot of great things in football, he’s coached a lot of big teams. But the next two games are the most important things for the Wolves.

Wolves appeared to be heading for a morale boost when Neves scored from the penalty spot to give his team the lead after Gonzalo Guedes canceled out Adam David Lallana’s opener victory.

While Wolves are hoping Lopetegui can get them out of their decline, Brighton is thriving under Chelsea’s replacements Graham Potter and Roberto De Zelby.

They have one more win after overtaking Porter’s Chelsea last week.
