Elche coach Rodriguez sacked as his team falls into the relegation zone

La Liga Elche FC announced on Monday that it has sacked Francisco Rodriguez as head coach. “We wish Francisco and his coaching team all the best in their personal and professional careers,” Elche said in a statement.

Francisco Rodriguez, 44, worked for Almería, UCAM Murcia, Lugo, Córdoba, Huesca, and Girona before coaching Elche. On November 30, 2021, Rodriguez succeeded Fran Escriba as Elche’s coach, when the team was 18th in La Liga.

The arrival of Rodriguez has put Elche back on track: at the end of the 2021/22 season, Elche finished 13th in the standings and completed the task of avoiding relegation. But in the new season, Elche has 1 draw and 5 losses in the first 6 league games. Today, it was defeated by Vallecano 1-2 and ranked last in the standings.

The contract between Rodriguez and Elche was originally due to expire in June 2023. After this loss, the club chose to terminate the contract early. Earlier, Rodriguez had told the media that he understood the decision of chairman Christian Bragarnik to fire him. “Anyone who sees my work knows what we want,” he said. “There’s a great deal of respect between the chairman, the team, and the coach. Whatever happens, we’ll have Elche’s interests in mind.”
