FC Porto announced on their official website on Thursday that the club have extended the contract of Portugal international goalkeeper Diogo Costa.
According to Porto’s official statement, Costa has signed a five-year long-term contract with the club which runs until the summer of 2027. At the same time, according to renowned Italian transfer journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Porto had also increased Costa’s release clause to €75million.
In his speech at the contract renewal ceremony, Costa said: “I want to thank the president of the club very much at this moment. I feel the same as last year. This is my home and I am another one who has helped Porto win as many titles as possible. I will always work hard to complete my job and I will never change from what I am now. It is a great honour for me to renew my contract with the club I love the most. I will work hard with the club to achieve our goals together. That’s why we continue to work hard, both individually and collectively as a team.”
“All the things I have been able to achieve are the strengths that the coaching staff and the team have given me. For me, unity is the most important thing. As footballers, this profession require our sense of responsibility to always be at top. It’s even more so in this club. It’s part of life, and I’m just going to make the best out of it.”
The 23-year-old Costa has joined the Porto youth academy since he was a child and has become the club’s main goalkeeper since last season. To date, Costa has played a total of 85 times for the Dragões in all competitions, recording 35 clean sheets, and has also won 2 Portuguese Primeira Liga and Taça de Portugal titles with the team, as well as 1 Portuguese Super Cup (Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira) championship.
Internationally, Costa has been a member of the Portuguese senior national team since October 2021. So far, he has played 7 times in all competitions for A Seleção, recording 4 clean sheets. This season, Costa set a record in the Champions League for saving penalty in three consecutive games, which has attracted a lot of attention. It is worth mentioning that the Mirror, Manchester Evening News and Daily Express all invariably reported last weekend that Manchester United are interested in signing Costa to replace David De Gea.
However, with him tying down his contract with Porto now, Ten Hag’s Premier League giants have completely lost the hope of signing Costa in the winter transfer window.
