Europa League winners Frankfurt move up four places, with 17 points after 10 games and are behind third-placed Hoffenheim on goal difference.
After a series of missed chances, Leverkusen gave up a penalty just before half-time when Jesper Lindstrom was brought down by Edmund Tapsoba in the box.
Striker Randall Kolo Muani took the penalty, which was saved by Lucas Hradecki , but VAR ruled that the Leverkusen goalkeeper was not in his defence, forcing a retake.

Leverkusen equalised in the 56th minute through Piero Cincapi ‘s header under new coach Xavi Alonso , but their joy was short-lived as Kolo Moua Nee made up for his penalty error with a diving header two minutes later.
Lindström made it 3-1 with a fine lob past Hradecki before Kamada scored a penalty in the 72nd minute as Cincapi took on Kolo in the penalty area – Muani’s tackle received a second yellow card and was sent off.
