Rangers announced on the official website on Monday that the club’s legendary Dutch left-back and head coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been sacked immediately.
Rangers wrote in an official statement: “Rangers Football Club confirmed today that the club has parted ways with manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the Board would like to place our sincere gratitude to Giovanni for all the hard work.”
“Since joining the club just over a year ago, Giovanni has led the club to their fifth European final, winning Scotland Cup last May and his first Champions League qualification in 12 years.”
“Unfortunately, the results and performances in recent months has not met expectations, hence the Board has today reluctantly made the decision to terminate the head coach’s contract.”
“The search for a new manager is currently underway.”
The 47-year-old Van Bronckhorst took over the vacancy left by the departure of Liverpool and England legendary captain Steven Gerrard in November 2021, and return to the club he has played between 1998 and 2001. He led the club to the Europa League final for the first time since 2008.
However, since last month’s 1-7 defeat to Liverpool in the Champions League group stage, calls for Van Bronckhorst to be sacked have become louder with the poor run of results.
In the past 5 matchdays of the Scottish Premiership, although Rangers achieved 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss, they only narrowly beat their opponents in many games, and ended up in completely winless in the Champions League group stage, which eventually became Van Bronckhorst’s fatal point.
